Built by Mughal Emperor Akbar between 1569 and 1585, this vast area holds the royal living quarters and public halls. The complex is constructed almost entirely from locally quarried red sandstone. Foreign tourists pay ₹610 to enter this section, while Indian nationals pay ₹50.

You will need about 2 hours to walk through the interconnected palaces and courtyards. Edibles are not allowed inside the main monument boundaries.

Diwan-i-Aam

15 minutesHall of Public Audience

Emperor Akbar used this Hall of Public Audience to meet with citizens and hear their grievances. The architecture focuses on an elevated seating pavilion for the ruler. Test the acoustics near the emperor's seat. It was designed so whispers could travel clearly across the large hall.

This is the Hall of Private Audience, where the emperor held confidential meetings and religious debates. It features a massive, intricately carved central pillar connecting to four elevated walkways. Look closely at the carvings on this pillar. It physically represents Akbar's inclusive, multi-religious philosophy.

Panch Mahal

20 minutesGreat photo spot

The Panch Mahal is a five-story open pavilion that diminishes in size at each ascending level. Royal ladies originally used it as a recreational space. You generally cannot climb to the upper floors for safety reasons. It remains an excellent subject for photography from the surrounding courtyards.

Jodha Bai's Palace

20 minutesLargest residence

This building is the largest residential palace in the ticketed complex. Akbar built it for his favorite Rajput queen. The design clearly blends Hindu and Mughal architectural styles. Look closely at the carved brackets and courtyard pillars to see distinct Gujarati and Rajasthani building elements.
